Nestled at the foot of the ‘Wolds in rural East Yorkshire is Carr House Farm, a family-run organic farm and home to Side Oven Bakery. It all began in 2003 when Caroline Sellers, inspired by a breadmaking course, fell in love with the craft and began baking using flour grown and milled right there on the farm. What started as a few loaves at a farmers’ market quickly grew into something much more.

As the local food landscape shifted and fewer markets ran, the bakery adapted- expanding its product range using different organic ingredients grown on the farm. A variety of breakfast cereals developed as spelt flour and oats became granola, soft fruits like apples became cordials, and their variety of hand-milled flours grew. Everything is small batch- made by hand with incredible attention to detail. Granola is hand-mixed and stirred every 10 minutes during baking. Every product is weighed, packed and processed by hand with care.

Side Oven is a true family affair. Jessica, who helped at markets on Saturdays, returned from the city to support her mum as the bakery grew. Her sister joined too and today, the whole family- mum, dad, and both daughters- work together on the farm and in the bakery.

Their approach is driven by two things: what customers ask for, and what can be grown on the farm. This philosophy keeps them connected to their roots and their community, allowing them to adapt their range without losing sight of where it all began.

Sustainability and organic principles are at the core of everything they do. From sowing seed to milling flour just metres from the bakery door, their field-to-loaf ethos is lived daily. For this family, organic isn’t a label- it’s a way of life, grounded in the visible difference they see in their soil and their surroundings.
